One of the inmates accused of killing another prisoner at the GEO prison in Lawton back in 2012 has been found guilty.  The jury deliberated just over two hours before reaching the verdict against Ryan Ray Garcia.

On Friday afternoon, both the prosecution and defense gave the jury their respective takes on the brutal stabbing of Sonny Limpy.

The entire case came down to the simple concept saying that “one must take responsibility for their own actions.”  The defense argues that Garcia was a product of peer pressure by gang leaders at the prison.  However, the State told jurors, despite desperate conditions, there is no excuse for killing another human being.

On Friday morning, jurors watched Lawton Police’s interrogation of Garcia.  Garcia said, when confronted by gang leaders to kill Limpy, he said he couldn’t do it.  The defense rested their case without calling any witnesses, but in closing statements said the interview proved Garcia didn’t want to get into trouble before being released from prison.  The defense rested their case by saying not one person could confirm if Garcia did in fact have a weapon in his hand when attacking Limpy.

The prosecution argued by referring to the surveillance video.  They said Garcia was on a straight-line mission to end his life without fear and regret.

The jury has recommended life in prison without parole for the murder.  There is no word yet on whether Garcia could serve that time at the GEO prison, but he is die back in court on April 8th for his sentencing.
