(PRWEB) February 11, 2014
The 12 Bar Blues Progression is one of the most common chord progressions in popular music. It is most commonly based on the 1-4-5 or 1-4-5-b6 (flat 6) chord progressions. The last two measures is usually a turnaround. The Turnaround is used many styles of music. The Blues Turnaround Turnaround came from the Ragtime Blues era. The cadence of the Blues Turnaround is backwards from traditional western music. The job of the Blues Turnaround is to show the listener where the chord progression ends and starts over, it does this by ending on the V (five) of the chord progression making it want to resolve back to the I (one).
Jon demonstrates this lesson as follows; first he plays the open 6th and 3rd strings open simultaneously using the hybrid picking technique, then he does a hammer-on to the first fret of the 3rd string with his first finger and then the open first string. Next he plays a shuffle by playing the open 6th string and follows that with the 4th fret of the 5th string and then the open 6th string and then 5th fret of the 5th string and then the open 6th again and then back to the 4th fret of the 5th string. He repeats this sequence 4 times, which is the first four bars of the progression. MacLennan continues this same idea through the rest of the chord progression and finishes it off with a turnaround.
