MSU Women's Golf: Mustangs Win Spring Opener

Mustangs win spring opener as final round cancelled

LAREDO, Texas – The Midwestern State Mustangs didn't have to swing a club on Tuesday to claim their first tournament victory of the season.

Winter weather, including temperatures in the mid-30s and a misting rain in Laredo, was coupled with much worse road conditions in Central and North Texas that caused host Texas A&M International to cancel the final day of the Jack Brown Memorial at the Laredo Country Club.

The Mustangs held a 23-stroke lead after the first round at 310, bettering Arkansas-Fort Smith's 333 in second and Rogers State (Okla.) at 334 in third.

MSU junior Brenna Moore of Burkburnett, Texas won her first individual tournament of the season and the second individual title of her career after firing a 1-over-par 73 on Monday. She bested freshman teammate Sierra Campbell of Rio Rancho, N.M., who finished second at 2-over 74.

Freshman Haley Dambold of Highland Village, Texas/Flower Mound Marcus was sixth at 9-over 81, while freshman Kellie Martin of Burleson, Texas/Mansfield Legacy was 10th at 10-over 82. Sophomore Kynze Mann added an 82.

MSU also had two individuals playing in the event, with freshman Madison Smith of Arlington, Texas/High joining the 10th place tie at 81 and freshman Caitlan Inman of London, Ontario, Canada posting an 87.

The Mustangs placed all five team players and one of their two individuals in the tournament's top 15.

The MSU women are in competition again in two weeks, Feb. 24-25, in the California Baptist Invitational at the Victoria Club in Riverside, Calif.
