Fire Victims Start from Scratch

Posted: Updated:

A house fire that sparked on the 6400 block of Kovarik Road last Saturday around 5:30 a.m. has one Texoma couple starting from scratch.

Owners Pat and Tanya McGinty lost their home, belongings and seven pets, some with special needs.

"Everything just happened so fast... All I could think of was getting up my husband, trying to find the babies and calling 9-1-1," said Tanya. "I had a little kitty cat that was blind, one with three legs, and one that was autistic."

The fire couldn't happen at a worse time. The couple's homeowners insurance had recently lapsed, so they were in the middle of looking for better options.

"We were just checking on insurance. In fact, I had a list by the phone to start checking insurance companies. Tried to get a better rate," said Pat.

In the wake of their tragedy, Pat and Tanya are working to send out a message about the importance of being insured.

"You never really think it's going to happen to you. You can't pull off until tomorrow. When things like that are going to expire, take notice and action. Do it before it's too late," they said.

As the two slowly work to rebuild, they said they are grateful for the overwhelming love and support from family, friends and neighbors.

"They've all got fantastic hearts. Like I said, we just can't explain how much we love everybody and how nice everybody has been. We go to bed thankful every night. We are blessed people, very blessed," said Pat and Tanya, with tears in their eyes.

The McGinty's children have set up a fund to help their parents.
