MSU Wins in Invitational Opener

Senior catcher Kim Jerrick and freshman Baylee Voigt continued to swing hot bats for Midwestern State as the Mustangs battered Rogers State 9-1 in five innings Friday afternoon in the Holiday Inn at the Falls Invitational at Mustangs Park.

Jerrick's team leading fifth homer of the season came on a three-run blast to clinch the run-rule victory for MSU which improved to 5-3 on the season.

Jerrick extended her current hitting streak to four games by going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. She is hitting 11-for-19 (.579) during the stretch with a double, four homers and nine RBIs.

Voigt slugged a homer in her third straight game when she lead off the fourth inning with a pinch drive over the center field fence.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first as sophomore outfielder Haley Howerton lined a triple past a drawn in left fielder then came in to score on Katelyn Vinson's run-scoring single up the middle.

MSU kept the pressure on in the second frame as Jerrick squibbed a cue-shot roller to second base to plate one run before Howerton popped a sacrifice fly to center field to push the Mustangs' advantage to 3-0.

Midwestern doubled its lead in the fourth following Voigt's leadoff blast. Howerton delivered an RBI-double to right field to plate Chelsey Wall, who had reached on a single to center field followed by Jerrick's single through the left-side of the infield.

Jerrick came plateward on Kelley Shaefer's ground out to second base to push the lead to 6-0.

Rogers State scored an unearned in the top of the fifth when Jackie Flores reached on an error and reached the plate on Toni Shurtliff's single to right field.

The run spoiled Erin Knox's shutout bid as the freshman from West allowed three hits while striking out three in five innings.

The Mustangs converted a two-out rally in the fifth as Jerrick homered after Krisha Hamm and Wall reached on a hit-by-pitch and walk, respectively.

Midwestern State continues tournament play Saturday against Southern Arkansas and Northeastern State at 1 and 5 p.m., respectively.
