BBB: Door-to-Door Solicitors

Spring is a popular time for door to door solicitors. The BBB recommends the following on how to handle door-to-door sellers and solicitors:

· Don't make a hasty decision and do your shopping. Some door-to-door sellers will put pressure on you to close the deal at that moment and make special offers to entice you. Don't make a purchasing decision while someone is at your door. Get at least three estimates from other companies. Have the soliciting company leave their information for you to look over at your leisure.
· Look at the contract. You need to carefully review the contract and be familiar with all of the terms. Only count on what is written in the contract. Be careful if a salesman makes a promise of something that isn't in writing.
· Verify the individual and the company. If you are interested in buying from a door-to-door seller, get everything in writing including price, warranty and all conditions. Check out the company with the BBB yourself and verify this person is an employee.
· Know your rights. The FTC's Three-Day Cooling-Off Rule gives the customer three days to cancel purchases over $25 that are made in the home or a location that is not the seller's permanent location.
