Drive To Conditions TXDOT Campaign

Weather conditions in Texoma are constantly changing as well as driving conditions. TxDot officials are launching a new "Drive to Conditions" campaign encouraging motorists to adapt their driving behaviors to the various weather conditions like wintry weather, fog, heavy rain and heavy traffic.
Here are the tips TXDOT says will make you safer in those different conditions:
  • When driving in heavy rain be cautious when traveling through flood-prone areas. Flash floods can come rapidly and unexpectedly during heavy rainfall. You're told to turn your headlights on and slow down, allowing extra distance for braking. Never attempt to drive through flooded roadways.
  • When driving in fog it is recommend that you do not drive faster than your field of vision. Use the right edge of the roadside reflectors as a guide. When driving in fog do not use high beam lights, instead set your lights to low beam and hazard lights.
  • When driving in winter weather drive slowly using smooth steering movements. It is much harder to control or stop your vehicle on a slick or snow covered surface. Leave plenty of room between you and other drivers on the roads. When you brake, do so early with steady stokes to test traction. Use extra caution on bridges, ramps and overpasses as these areas tend to freeze first. If you find yourself beginning to skid officials say to stay calm and ease your foot off the gas while carefully steering in the direction you want the front of your vehicle to go.
  • When driving in heavy traffic do not flash your lights at another driver and maintain a safe distance from other drivers. Stay in the same lane, when vehicles constantly change lanes, the flow of traffic is repeatedly interrupted. Also stay focused on driving. Don't use the slow momentum as an opportunity to check your email or multi-task.
