Red Cross Rescue

March is officially known as Red Cross month to honor the efforts of the humanitarian organization. Katrina Farmer is the Executive Director of the North Central Texas Red Cross Chapter. According to Farmer Wichita County has seen the most amount of natural disaster incidents and families and individuals out of all 27 counties in the NCT Red Cross Chapter.

If you look at the numbers from this fiscal year of 2014 you'll see that out of all 93 incidents in North Central Texas 38 were in Wichita County. The numbers also reveal that while the number of incidents from this year to last year are about the same the amount of families and individuals needing assistance has risen. Farmer said that the amount of financial aid has also seen a spike.

"We have had a few more apartment fires this year, last year we had one and we've had three this year, so that increases the number of those groups of people all in one incident. So that means while there have not been more fires really, there's been more people that we've taken care of and so the expenses have been higher for us," said Farmer.

There are a few key steps that you can take to help prevent fires in your home. Click on the link below to access the Red Cross fire safety checklist.
