Burk's Jackson Signs with UMHB Hoops

Burkburnett basketball standout Chavaz Jackson signed Wednesday to play college ball at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor!

He'll join former Bulldog star Jerard Graham, who played his junior season at UMHB this past year after transferring from Clarendon College.

Even though Jackson moved to Burkburnett after Graham graduated, they are still close friends.

"I know him real well," Jackson said. "He comes down here in the summer, I play with him, stay with him some, we're real good friends.

"That's also one of the deciding factors I had, was because Jerard was there. I had somebody that I knew and that could really take me under their wing, get me familiar with the team and better my game."

Jackson started this season red-hot before a severely sprained ankle cost him about a month and left him playing at 3/4 speed for another month, but he still made first-team all-District 5-3A.

He said missing that time helped him appreciate the opportunity to play the game even more.

"I can't really explain it to you, because I just love the game and it was real hard watching my team go out there and play," Jackson said.

Bulldog Head Coach Danny Nix also had praise for his senior saying, "Chavaz is a very good basketball player but an even better person and student. He is an extremely hard worker who has a tremendous upside as a player. He has really improved the last two years."

UMHB, located in Belton, Texas, went to the NCAA Division III National Championship game in 2013, before going 17-9 in 2013-14. Graham was one of the team's best players, averaging 15.8 points per game, second on the team, and a team-high 9 rebounds per contest.
