Coyotes' Vasquez Signs with Howard Payne Football

Posted: Updated:
Another Wichita Falls High School football player is heading to the next level, after the Coyotes' most successful season in years.

Miguel Vasquez signed to play at Howard Payne University Tuesday in the Coyote Fieldhouse. He started at offensive guard and defensive end for Old High and will play right guard in Brownwood.

A team captain, he made first-team all-district on the offensive side as a senior.

Even at the NCAA Division III level, a player like Miguel at 5'11" and about 215 pounds is undersized as a lineman, but Vasquez said Tuesday the HPU coaches think what he did in high school will transfer to college.

"I've just got to get bigger, stronger and faster, and compete with the bigger linemen," he said. "What they run there is almost what we run here. They run a low of Power and stuff. Here, I was a pulling guard, which was a big part of it. And they said they liked how I did that."

Vasquez also was quick to credit coach Danny Russell, who helped turn the program around in his first season at WFHS, calling his senior season the best experience of his life.

"He's a great leader, I really look up to him," Vasquez said of Coach Russell. "We all bought in to what he brought. The whole system, the new offense. He knew how to get the team together, create a bond with all of us."
