National Work Zone Awareness Week

Posted: Updated:
The Texas Department of Transportation kicked off its National Work Zone Awareness Week on Monday.

The campaign reminds drivers to slow down, stay alert, and obey traffic signs to protect themselves and roadside workers.

TxDOT’s Deputy Executive Director said they do everything they can to make sure the work zones are as safe as possible.  However, he said every driver is responsible for their safety and the safety of others.

In Texas, there can be more that 2,500 active TxDOT work zones at any given time.  Last year there were over 17,000 work zone crashes.  Over 3,500 crashes resulted in serious injuries and there were 115 deaths.

In many work zones, there are posted signs warning drivers that traffic fines can increase if they don’t obey the speed limits and any other warning signs.
