Positive Progress For Electra Police Department

Posted: Updated:
The City of Electra has hired six new staff members.

This included four new dispatchers and two full time officers.  The announcement was made at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

Deputy Chief Michael Hopkins said he is excited to see progress, but he knows there is still more positions to fill.  However, they won’t just hire anyone with a badge.  They want to make sure they will serve the community in the right way.  They want the best officers for the city.

Hopkins also explained that because of the new employees, this will take off some of the load for the Wichita County Sheriff’s Department.  They will still need assistance, but not as much as before.

The Wichita County Sheriff’s Department has been helping Electra since September, 2013 because of the short staff.  Hopkins said it has been a blessing, but he wants the city of Electra to have their own police department.  He also wanted the community to look at the police department and have confidence in all of the staff.

Hopkins said they are working to get a full staff as soon as possible, but there is no rush.

The two police officers that were hired are already on patrol and the four dispatchers started last week.
