Burkburnett's Strickland Signs with Okla. Christian

For the second time in three weeks, a Burkburnett basketball player has signed to play college basketball.

Wednesday, Elijah Strickland signed with the Eagles of Oklahoma Christian University in Oklahoma City.

OCU recently moved up to Division II, joining the Heartland Conference in 2012.

Since the Heartland is currently in the same South Central Region as Midwestern State for basketball, Elijah could possibly get to come home and play against MSU in his time there, possibly even in the NCAA Tournament.

Wednesday, Strickland credited a lot of people in Burkburnett who got him where he is now.

"Coach Nix was a wonderful coach for me," Strickland said. "I've known him since my brother [2008 graduate Desmond Strickland]'s been here, and he just taught me how to be a man, for one. Just how to be a better basketball player. All my teammates pushed me each day in practice. My parents pushed me each day, just to be a better person."

Strickland said the OCU coaches liked what they saw of his shooting -- he shot 42% from 3-point range his junior and senior seasons -- but he knows he'll need to work on building up his body for the rigors of NCAA basketball.

Our Training Camp Road Trip continues in District 5-2A Div. I with the Seymour Panthers. They're coming off a 7-win season, and with 15 returning letterwinners, they're ready for even more success in 2017. Running back David Watson will be the key offensive weapon for the Panthers. He gained almost 1900 total yards a year ago and is a threat to go to the house from anywhere on the field. "It helps out a lot, knowing he can just make plays out of nowhere and help us out," s...
