Softball: Mustangs Remain 7th in South Central Region

Midwestern State remained at No. 7 in the latest edition of the South Central Region rankings released Wednesday afternoon by the NCAA Division II Softball Committee.

The Mustangs fell to 25-21 after dropping a doubleheader to Cameron last Wednesday in Lawton. MSU closes regular season play with a three-game series against Tarleton State Friday and Saturday at Mustangs Park.

The Mustangs are a part of a strong contingent from the Lone Star Conference occupying five of the 10 spots in the rankings.

West Texas A&M (44-4) leads the way followed by Angelo State (37-10), St. Mary's (Texas) (38-9), Texas Woman's (31-15), Metro State (Colo.) (25-11), Cameron (26-16), MSU, St. Edward's (Texas) (23-20), Colorado-Colorado Springs (25-13) and Colorado State-Pueblo (23-18).

The top eight teams advance to the 2014 NCAA Division II South Central Regional which will be played in two four-team, double elimination tournament at campus sites from May 8-10.

If the postseason started today, West Texas A&M would host Texas Woman's, Metro State and St. Edward's in one regional while St. Mary's, Cameron and Midwestern State would travel to Angelo State in the second regional.

The advancing teams battle in a best-of-3 super regional at the site of the highest remaining seed on May 16-17 for the right to play in the 2014 NCAA Division II Softball Championships to be held from May 22-26 at Moyer Complex in Salem, Va.

The NCAA Division II postseason field is set for release on Monday, May 5 at 9 a.m. via selection show on NCAA.com.

M. Tennis: Mustangs Stay on Top of Region

Midwestern State continued to retain its No. 1 position atop the South Central Region rankings released Wednesday by the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship Committee.

The Mustangs won a trio of matches last week, defeating 17th ranked Cameron 5-1, 39th ranked Washburn 8-1 and Texas-Permian Basin 9-0.

MSU has won 10 of its last 11 to move to 17-6 on the season, but are a perfect 11-0 against in-region opposition.

The Mustangs are trailed by Cameron (12-4), Western New Mexico (11-5), St. Edward's (10-2), Colorado Mesa (9-5), St. Mary's (Texas) (6-4) and Metro State (Colo.) (9-8).

Five teams, including automatic bids from the Heartland and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conferences advance to regional play beginning May 3 at campus sites.

The committee announces the postseason tournament field on Tuesday, April 29.

MSU has faced four of the seven other programs ranked No. 1 in their respective regions claiming a win over Northwest Missouri State (Central) while taking tight 5-4 losses to Armstrong Atlantic (Ga.) (Southeast) and Drury (Mo.) (Midwest). The West Region's top-ranked squad -- Hawaii Pacific defeated the Mustangs 9-0.

The Mustangs advanced to the Elite Eight for the second time in school history a season ago before falling to national runner-up Armstrong Atlantic (Ga.). The 2014 NCAA Division II Tennis Championships are set for Sanlando Park Tennis Center in Altamonte Springs, Fla. from May 14-17.

Midwestern State is idle until the NCAA Tournament.

Midwestern State maintained its hold on the No. 1 spot in the South Central Region rankings released Wednesday by the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship Committee.

The Mustangs have rolled to 11-straight wins while posting 20 wins for the first time since 2005.

Midwestern collected three big wins at the MSU Tennis Center last week, downing 49th ranked Cameron 5-4, Washburn 8-1 and Texas-Permian Basin 9-0 to go to 20-3 overall and improving to 13-0 against in-region foes.

The Mustangs are trailed by St. Mary's (9-4), Cameron (15-4), Arkansas-Fort Smith (9-5), Tarleton State (11-4) and Newman (Kan.) (15-3).

Midwestern opens play in the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament on Friday at 2 p.m. against Texas A&M-Kingsville at the Southlake Tennis Center in Southlake, Texas. The winner advances to face the winner of the Cameron/Tarleton State semifinal on Saturday at 10 a.m. for the conference championship.
