M. Golf: Oland Rallies For Opening-Round 72 at Regionals

Midwestern State's Derek Oland rattled off five birdies in an eight-hole stretch to battle his to even par in the opening round of the NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional Monday at Par-72, 6,909-yard Grey Rock Golf Club.
"Derek was able to get on a run," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "He's done that all year long. He was able to get himself back into contention. He has a chance to win any time he tees it up."
Like the rest of his teammates, the junior from McKinney got off to a rough and stood 5-over through is first six holes as the Mustangs teed off on the Back Nine.
Oland recovered for a birdie on Hole No. 17 then strung together birdies on Nos. 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 before posting a bogey on his final hole of the day to finish at an Even-par 72 to stand tied for seventh three strokes off of the pace of tournament leaders Brandon Hortt of California State, Monterey Bay and Andres Rodas of St. Edward's.
MSU stumbled out of the blocks as all but one golfer posted bogeys which includes a double, a quadruple and quintuple on No. 10 while facing stiff 20-mile per hour wind off of the first two tees.
"We didn't get off to a very good start as a team and never recovered," Ray said. "The guys are very disappointed. We hope to bounce back and get back in it tomorrow."
Freshman Colton Dorion carded an 8-over 80 (77t), while senior Julio Gonzalez-Galvan battled his way to a 9-over 81 (83t) and senior Jeremy LeGuen rounded out countable scores with a 12-over 84 (100t).
"It was a tough day for the Mustangs," Ray said. "Our inability to hit fairways cost us dearly today. We knew this was a tree lined course and knew this was a target golf course. The kids made a good effort at it, but didn't hit fairways. When you do that, you are going to have a tough day on this course."
Sophomore Brandon Banks carded a 16-over 86 to place 107th after the opening round.
The Mustangs totaled a 29-over 317 and head into the second round of the 54-hole competition in 19th place.
California State, Monterey Bay tops the team leader board with an even-par 288 followed by St. Edward's (291/+3), Chico State (293/+5), Western New Mexico (295/+7) and Cameron (299/+11) while Hawaii-Hilo and Colorado, Colorado Spring are tied for sixth (300/+12).
The top six teams and four low scoring individuals not associated with advancing teams move on to the NCAA Division II Championships set for May 19-23 at The Meadows in Allendale, Mich.
Second round play begins Tuesday at 8 a.m.
