Nighthawks to Play Exhibition Game Saturday

The Wichita Falls Nighthawks are set to hit the field for the first time in 2014, playing an exhibition game Saturday night in Windthorst!

They'll face the Galveston Monarchs, a team from the spring-season Xclusive Football League that concluded its season April 26th with a 7-3 record.

Kickoff at Trojan Field will be at 8:15, so as not to interfere with Mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

On Wednesday, Newschannel 6 spoke with Nighthawks wide receiver Jimmy Pipkin. He played a season at Midwestern State and enters his second year as a Nighthawk.

He said he's excited to hit the field for the team's first-ever game under the lights.

"One thing is, we don't have to worry about the Sun being out there," he said with a laugh. "It brings a different kind of feeling, a whole different demeanor to the game. I'm expecting the fans to be out there, stadium packed. I don't know how to explain it, I just can't wait to be up under the lights, at night. Hey, it's football!"

Pipkin also said, since he grew up in the Dallas area and played his college ball at MSU, this will be his first taste of the small-town, "Friday Night Lights" style football we are so familiar with here in Texoma.

He talked about his former college quarterback, Brandon Kelsey, who is now with the Nighthawks as a wide receiver.

"'BK', he's going to be a great attribute to our team. A great one," Pipkin said, adding that his former upperclassman now is looking to his old teammate for help transitioning to the new position.

"He comes to me for advice, how to get off the jam. He's focusing on that right now and like I said, he's going to help us out a lot. With him playing at the slot, [myself] playing outside, with Howard Morrow on the other side and our quarterback Omar, we have too many weapons. I know for a fact, nobody will be able to stop us."

Despite all the firepower on offense, Pipkin said the defense was actually the strength of the team.

"From the D-Line, to the DBs, they're a nightmare--for real," Pipkin said, echoing the slogan the team's defense used last season. "We feed off of them, as well. On offense we have a lot of key players that played last year, and we're not going to miss a beat, but the strong point for our team is our defense. I don't see anybody scoring on our team."

The regular season kicks off two weeks from Saturday, on May 31st at Memorial Stadium against the Texas Eagles. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets Available for Exhibition

Tickets for Saturday's exhibition game cost $10 each and are available in Wichita Falls at the Nighthawks Store in Parker Square, and in Windthorst at Joe's Kwik Stop and Windthorst General Store. They will also be available at the gate but with seating for only about 2,000 it's advisable to get them early.
