Fire Burns 100 Acres

Posted: Updated:
A grass fire that shut down Highway 287 temporarily on Wednesday, is now out and being monitored.
The flames broke out in the median of the highway around 5:00.pm. Flames quickly spread across the highway and headed to the west toward the Allred Prison and the Red River Speedway. Multiple fire departments got the flames under control in just over an hour.

"We lost about 100 acres of cultivated land," said Wichita Falls Interim Fire Chief Jon Reese. "We were able to control it without it spreading outside of our four control points. So, we were able to stop it. We haven't lost any structures and their are no reported injuries at this time."

Besides the Wichita Falls Fire Department, Wichita West, Burkburnett, Iowa Park and Sheppard Air Force Base crews worked that blaze. The Wichita Falls Police Department, Wichita County Sheriff's Office and Department Of Public Safety worked on traffic control during the blaze. Crews monitored that burned area to watch for any hot spots.
