Petrolia Ready for State Tournament!

The Petrolia Lady Pirate softball team is ready for Wednesday's State Semifinal matchup with #1-ranked defending state champion Weimar.

"It's kinda nerve-wracking," says senior catcher Abby Anderson. "But we've gotten to play a game at state before [in 2012]. I feel like that will give us, not an advantage, but confidence coming into it."

The Lady Pirates, ranked third of the four regional champions in the final TGCA ranking before the tournament, also said they're not worried about Weimar's lofty reputation.

"Rankings don't mean anything," Anderson said. "I feel like we can go out there and beat them."

The real tough part for the Lady Pirates, according to their coach, is unfamiliarity with Weimar.

"We don't know a whole lot about them," said Dede Gray. "It's a little nerve-wracking not to know what kind of pitches the pitcher likes to throw, or what tendencies the batters have. So we are going into this pretty blind, I hope we can make adjustments during the game and be able to come off with the gold in our hands."

Gray has said this tournament will be her last as a coach, as she will retire following the season.

"It's pretty incredible just to get there," Gray said of the State Tournament. "Being my last year, with such a great group of girls, is just totally exciting."

#3 Petrolia and #1 Weimar will play at noon Wednesday at Red and Charline McCombs Field at the University of Texas in Austin. Their game follows the first semifinal between #2 Hubbard and #4 Harleton, which starts at 9 a.m.

The Class A state title game will be Thursday at 3 p.m.
