Hawks' Season Ends in Doubleheader

Posted: Updated:
Iowa Park's great baseball season came to a swift end Friday night in Abilene, dropping a pair of 6-5 decisions to Lubbock Cooper in the Region I-3A Finals.

After winning Game 1 Wednesday night 11-1 in five innings, the Hawks fell behind 5-0 after four innings in Game 2 Friday. They got one run back in the fifth, then pulled within 6-5 after six innings and had the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the 7th, but a 4-6-3 double play ended the game, forcing a decisive Game 3.

In that game, Iowa Park jumped on top first with a second inning sac fly by Mason Rhoades that brought in Brennan Whitaker, then after Cooper tied it in the third, the Hawks scored two more in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead.

But Cooper answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead, then tacked on two more in the fifth for a 6-3 lead.

Franco Nieto and Landen Kimbro drove in runs in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 6-5, but the Hawks could not score in the seventh inning, ending their season.

Iowa Park finishes the season 31-5 overall.
