Summer Food Program

Posted: Updated:
Kids were swimming, splashing and diving at the Harrell Park pool Monday afternoon. All are students a part of Camp Fire North Texas after school program and come next week some will be in its summer camp.

"We have about 250-300 children a week and they have a wonderful time doing all the sports, the games, they swim twice a day in our swimming pools,” said Bettye Ricks, Director of Camp Fire North Texas.

Ricks says campers stay busy with multiple activities throughout the day, but are not too busy to pass up a hot meal.

“They are hungry. Yes, they are,” said Ricks. “Some of them in our after school program, we feed them everyday a hot and nutritious meal, and some of them eat a couple of meals not just one."

A meal they would otherwise go without once the last school bells ring in summer.

Many students that attend Camp Fire attend Wichita Falls Independent Schools, where 65 percent are economically disadvantaged and eat free or reduced lunch.

During the summer that number could increase, but Camp Fire director believes WFISD feeding its campers, is making a difference.

“We are so appreciative of this, because it’s just one of those things. The children need to eat and they need to eat good food,” said Ricks.

Ricks said while times have changed, she remembers the days its organization could barely feed its children.

"We fed them peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. That's what we had. That’s been a while ago now, but that's what we did, because they needed to have food to eat,” said Ricks.

If you know someone that could use a hot meal this summer, below is a list of dates and times WFISD will be running its summer feeding program.
