Derek Oland Top Qualifier for Southern Amateur

Midwestern State junior Derek Oland continued his strong play on the course Tuesday in summer amateur play.

Oland fired a 7-under-par 65 to finish on top of the Dallas qualifier for the prestigious Southern Amateur.

The McKinney, Texas/Boyd junior topped the field at the par 72, 6,174-yard Dallas Athletic Club's Blue Course and earned one of the five qualifying spots from the Dallas event.

The 108th Southern Amateur is July 16-19 at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn., a suburb of Chattanooga.

The Southern dates back to 1902 with its champions roster reading like a Who's Who of competitive golf including Bobby Jones, Don January, Hubert Green, Lanny Wadkins, Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, Justin Leonard and more recently Webb Simpson.

Oland, a PING Division II first-team All-American this season, became the first MSU golfer to advance to play in the NCAA Division II National Championships.
