Beef Prices Are At An All Time High

WICHITA FALLS, TX - The price of your next hamburger could be as expensive as a sirloin steak. Beef prices are at an all time high, more than double its price only two years ago.

We spoke with Billy Easter, the Owner of the Wichita Livestock Sales Company who says Texomans can expect smaller beef portions at restaurants for a higher price. And Pat’s Drive-In Restaurant is thinking about raising their menu prices for the second time in only six months.

Troy Collier, Owner of Texas Best Meats said, “The cost of beef is high because of the drought because there’s less cattle to kill and less cattle coming out of the feed lot. This is why market prices are so high.”

Collier showed me a two year old order for brisket that cost $219. That same order would cost more than $450 today.

“From what I hear, at least for the next year or so, prices are going to stay high,” said Collier.

Billy Easter says if we want to drop the price of beef, we’re going to have to sacrifice jobs in the beef industry.

“And it’s gonna reach a point where the infrastructure is gonna have to down size because it’s so expensive to build these packing houses,” said Easter. “If we downsize to meet the supply then we could see beef drop down some.”
