Vernon Residents React To Going Back to Stage 3

Texoma Home and Garden has been a business in Vernon for 20 years.  One of the owners, Joni Schatte, said the continuing drought in Texoma is the worst she has ever seen.   However, Schatte said going back to a stage three drought is a good thing.

"I think it's great.  I just hope that everyone bears in mind that we're not out of the woods yet.  We're still in a drought," said co-owner of Texoma Home and Garden, Joni Schatte.

The ongoing drought has changed her business at Texoma Home and Garden in many ways.

"It's changed it a lot.  We've gone to a lot of drought tolerant plants and we've been doing a lot of re-landscaping.  We've got a lot of work going on, which is good," said Schatte.

In a stage four drought, Texoma Home and Garden offered their customers drought tolerant plants like yuccas and Texas sage.

Now that Vernon has returned to stage three drought restrictions, the nursery can sell begonias, annuals to their customers.

"A lot less in bedding plants and things like that, but we're still busy so that's good," said Schatte.

After going back to stage three, business at Texoma Home and Garden is still busy.

"A slight increase.  I think people are still kind of apprehensive, but they have hope.  Everybody is happier now that it has been eased up a little," said Schatte.

A happy feeling for Schatte going down a drought stage, but there is still a need to conserve.

"We took it (water) so for granted and maybe you know just change it as a lifestyle change just conserve," said Schatte.
