Hirschi Coach Chavez Leaving

For the second time in as many days, the Wichita Falls ISD finds itself looking for a new high school baseball coach.

Justin Chavez resigned Tuesday to take over at the new Benbrook High School, following former Hirschi football coach Cody Slater.

Chavez won 24 games in five years at Hirschi, where his teams often struggled with numbers and didn't often have a lot of raw talent or experience. In 2011, his team beat Iowa Park 3-2 in its district opener, for Hirschi's first district win since 2003.

Speaking to Newschannel 6, Chavez said the opportunity to build a new program from scratch at Benbrook, which is expected to be a Class 4A team once it has its full four classes on-campus.

"It's a baseball-rich area," Chavez said. "I was told there are already 28 freshman who were looking to play this coming season."

On Monday, Wichita Falls HS baseball coach Rob Johnson announced he was resigning in order to become an assistant principal at Washington-Jackson Elementary School.
