MSU's Oland Opens with 75 at Southern Amateur

Midwestern State golfer Derek Oland shot a 3-over-par 75 in the opening round of the 108th Southern Amateur Championship on Wednesday.

The senior-to-be from McKinney, Texas/Boyd is 57th in the 168-man field after the first of four rounds at the par 72, 7,155 yard The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn., just outside Chattanooga.

East Carolina's Grayson Murray fired a blistering 6-under 66 for the first round lead in a field that has 27 players at par or better.

Starting on the 10th tee, Oland opened with a bogey, followed by consecutive birdies and another bogey before finishing the back nine even par.

After making the turn, Oland again went bogey, birdie and stayed even until posting a triple-bogey six on the par 3 No. 8 hole. His par on No. 9 ended the round at 3-over.

The Southern Amateur is one of the top amateur tournaments in the country, with a list of legendary champions led by Bobby Jones.

The 72-hole tournament continues with a second round on Thursday, where Oland will tee off at 1:20 Texas time from the first tee.
