Oland Struggles in 3rd Round of Southern Amateur

The day after Midwestern State golfer Derek Oland moved into the top 11 with one of the best scores of the tournament, the Mustangs linkster faded back into the pack in the third round of the 108th Southern Amateur at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn.

Oland, a senior-to-be from McKinney, Texas/Boyd, struggled to a 9-over-par 81 in third round action on the par 72, 7,155 yard course, to slip to a 54-hole total of 8-over 224 that has him sitting tied for 41st in the field.

Texas' Beau Hossler fired a 2-under 70 in the third round to take the individual lead at 8-under 208, while Virginia Tech's Trevor Cone is at 6-under 210 after matching the 2-under for the day.

Oland started the day with a birdie on the first hole to go to 2-under, but then cratered on the front nine. He posted a double bogey, a triple bogey and three more bogeys in the next seven holes before finishing the front side with a birdie to stand at 6-over at the turn.

Oland then opened the back side with a double bogey on the 10th, his third of the round. He posted another bogey at 15 before finishing the round with a birdie and a bogey to finish at 81 and 8-over for the tournament.

East Carolina's Grayson Murray, who led the tournament after the first and second rounds, withdrew from the tournament without completing the 17th hole as he was already 9-over for the round and had fallen out of contention.

The final round of the tournament is set for Saturday at The Honors Course in the suburb of Chattanooga.
