Oland Finishes T-38 at Southern Amateur

Midwestern State golfer Derek Oland finished tied for 38th in the 108th Southern Amateur at The Honors Course outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Oland, a senior-to-be from McKinney, Texas/Boyd, shot a 5-over-par 77 in the final round on the par 72, 7,155-yard course to finish at 13-over-301.

Starting on the 10th hole, Oland opened with a double bogey and three more consecutive bogeys before getting on track with four straight pars and a birdie at 18 to make the turn.

He made it two in a row with a birdie on the first to start his back side and was even until consecutive bogeys on the sixth and seven. Oland finished by parring out the eighth and ninth.

North Florida's M.J. McGuire won the tournament in the final round, firing a 1-under 71 to win by three strokes at 4-under 284. New Mexico's Victor Perez and Australian golfer Geoff Drakeford tied for second at 1-under 287.

Third round leaders Beau Hossler of Texas and Trevor Cone of Virginia Tech, fell back in the final round. Hossler shot an 8-over 80. Cone, who held the tournament lead after the 12th hole of the final round, lost seven strokes in the last six holes to finish with Hossler and Va. Tech teammate Scott Vincent in fourth at even par 288.

The Southern is the first of two major amateur events that the Midwestern State All-American will compete in this summer. Oland will play in the 2014 U.S. Amateur Championship Aug. 11-17 at the Atlanta Athletic Club's Highlands Course in Johns Creek, Ga.

The Holliday Eagles won 7 games a year ago, but 6 of those wins came by a touchdown or less. They're hoping a new addition can help them breathe a little easier in the 4th quarter this year
