"Ball for LaKarl" Next Saturday

The entire Wichita Falls community is coming together around the family of LaKarl Williams.

The 2014 Hirschi HS graduate passed away Monday after a car accident early Sunday morning.

Now a pair of his friends are putting together a 3-on-3 basketball tournament to raise money for his family. The tournament, which they're calling "Ball for LaKarl," will be Saturday, August 9th starting at 9 a.m. at the Rider HS gym.

Recent Rider graduates Geoffrey Gerrard and Deshaun Delgado told Newschannel 6 they wanted to honor Williams's memory with the sport he loved.

"Well I met him through basketball in fourth grade," Gerrard said. "I've played with him ever since, against him and everything. That's the real reason: it's his favorite sport."

"He had a passion for going out and playing basketball," Delgado said. "I just thought it was something that could bring the whole community out and just do something he loved to do, and that's ball."

All of the proceeds for the event, which will cost $10 per team with a maximum of four players per team, will go to Williams's family.

"I just think people should come out and support his family," Delgado said. "In a time like this it's when they need support the most. I feel like it's a good thing for the whole community of Wichita Falls to come together and show we are one community. We all can come together."
