MSU Men Ranked 12th in Preseason Poll

Midwestern State opens the 2014 campaign ranked 12th in the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America Division II Preseason Poll, released Thursday afternoon.

The Mustangs return nine letter winners and seven starters off of last season's 12-4-2 squad which reeled off a 13-match match unbeaten streak to advance to the the third round of the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Junior Nick Petolick, a Daktronics second-team All-America, returns in goal after leading the nation with a 0.315 goals against average and a .933 save percentage. He posted a 10-1-2 mark in goal while posting nine clean sheets.

Senior Chase Robertson, a Daktronics honorable mention All-American, made 14 starts at defender helping the Mustangs back line limit the opposition to a 0.74 goals against average.

The defense is also bolstered by senior center back Kalen Ryden and junior Javan Toledo.

Senior striker Len Smith returns to lead the Mustangs' attack posting a team-high eight goals last season while dishing out two assists as a two-time NSCAA All-South Central Region honoree.

Other returning starters include senior midfielder Andrew Power (5 goals, 2 assists) and junior midfielder Ben Clarvis (1 goal, 3 assists).

The Mustangs are one of only three teams from the South Central Region to receive mention in the poll joining No. 10 Regis (Colo.) and No. 25 West Texas A&M.

Midwestern State opens the regular with a pair of matches in Colorado. The Mustangs take on Fort Lewis on Friday, Sept. 5 at 4 p.m. before taking on Colorado Mesa on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. Both games are at Dirks Field in Durango.

Midwestern kicks off the preseason with an exhibition against Wayland Baptist on Tuesday, Aug. 19 at the MSU Soccer Field. Start time is set for 7 p.m.
