MSU Cross Country Earns Conference Championship

Five runners wasn't enough to decide the Lone Star Conference Championship Saturday morning at the former Hawk Ridge Golf Course.

Midwestern State and West Texas A&M finished knotted with 49 points, but the Mustangs claimed their league title on the strength of their sixth-place finisher.

West Texas A&M's Emma Love, Michaela Johnson and Brittany Mitchell finished 1-2-3 finishing the 5K course in 22:37.30, 22:39.80 and 22:56.60 while Lauren Laisure took 9th and Caitlyn Cecchini finished 34th to give the Lady Buffs a total of 49.

Senior Gabby Ruiz paced the Mustangs finishing fourth with a time of 22:57.20, while Michelle (23:17.10) and Kim Krezonoski (23:20.00) placed seventh and eight, junior Brittany Adams (23:27.30) placed 12th and junior Ana Lopez (23:57.20) was 18th as MSU matched WT's total of 49.

But Midwestern senior Cara Mack (24:01.90) placed 20th well ahead of West Texas A&M's sixth runner - Gillian Law, who placed 41st to give the Mustangs their first LSC Championship since winning four straight from 2008-11.

Ruiz, Michelle and Kim Krezonoski and Adams gained All-Lone Star Conference honors finishing amongst the meet's first 15 runners, while senior Danielle Chavarria (24:04.80/21st), senior Emma Ramirez (24:52.40/30th), freshman Angela Dees (25:03.00/32nd) and junior Maira Salinas (25:50.20/38th).

Midwestern State claimed its third straight team meet win and fourth of the season. The Mustangs compete in the NCAA Division II South Central Region Championship on Saturday, Nov. 22. The top six finishing teams advance to nationals set for Dec. 6 in Louisville.
