Thanksgiving is one day away, which millions of Americans are traveling.
It 's a time where family and friends come together, but to make it happen, usually someone hosts while the others travel.
AAA Travel nationwide estimates 46.3-million Americans will travel between Wednesday and Sunday. It's a 4.2-percent increase from last year. AAA Texas Senior Public Affairs Specialist Doug Shupe said 3.6-million Texans will travel 50 miles or more to spend time with their family for the holiday.
The most popular way to travel is by a vehicle.
“The vast majority of them are going to go by car or truck because traveling by automobile is the most economical mode of transportation. Of the 3.6-million Texans traveling 3.3-million will be going by automobile,” Shupe said.
Another reason is gas prices. State wide the average is $2.60 per gallon.
“Compare that to last year, and were were paying $3.13 per gallon,” Shupe said.
However, gas prices across Texoma are around $2.44.
One of the things you should consider before hitting the road, is getting your vehicle checked. No one wants to get stuck on the side of the road. If you don't have time, the least you should do is check your oil and your tire pressure.
Another great tip is to map out your route and be prepared for heavy traffic. So, be patient and don't get distracted while driving. A good idea is to have a designated texter. Also, if you plan on drinking, don't drive.
“Call for a cab service, plan for an overnight stay where ever you're celebrating, or have a non-drinking designated driver for the entire evening,” Shupe said.
