Mustangs Fall to Division I UTA, 5-2

Midwestern State battled Division I Texas-Arlington closely before falling 5-2 in exhibition play Friday afternoon at the UTA Tennis Center.
"The men battled and had an opportunity to win," MSU coach Scott Linn said.

The Mustangs claimed two doubles' victories to take the first point of the match as Kyle Davidson and Zack Santagate combined to beat Sebastian Erimicioiu and Johnathan Gonzalez 6-3 at No. 1 while Chris Norrie and Daniel Gallivoda defeated Stefan Williams and Mario Muniesa 6-1 at No. 3.

Kacper Boborykin and Matt Tyer led Daniel Amengol and Carlos Arbiza 4-3 at No. 2 before the match was pulled.

The Mustangs pushed two singles' matches to split sets and would have claimed the match with two victories, but UTA held on for wins at Nos. 1 and 4 to hold of the MSU charge.

Erimicioiu defeated Davidson 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 1, while Gonzalez survived Gallivoda at No. 4 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 to secure the result for Texas-Arlington.

Midwestern State opens regular season play Friday against Collin College (Texas) at the MSU Tennis Center. First serve is set for 1 p.m.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Midwestern State took a step forward against Division I competition falling to UT-Arlington 7-0 Friday afternoon at the UTA Tennis Center.

"The ladies had a better performance than against Stephen F. Austin the first time out," MSU coach Scott Linn said.

The Mavericks swept doubles play to claim the first point of the match match while claiming five of the six singles' matchups in straight sets.

Senior Taylor Coffman was the lone MSU player to push her singles' battle past two sets, eventually falling to Angeles de los Rios 6-4, 6-2, 6-0.

Midwestern State opens regular season play against Central Oklahoma on Saturday, Feb. 14. First serve at the MSU Tennis Center is set for noon.

Indoor Track: Flores Narrowly Misses Indoor PR at Jayhawk Classic

Midwestern State's Ashley Flores missed out on an indoor personal best in the mile by the narrowest of margins Friday afternoon in the Jayhawk Classic at KU's Anschutz Sports Pavilion.

The senior from Haltom City, who clocked a 5:04.67 to finish fifth, finished 0.01 seconds off of her PR set at the 2013 Oklahoma Baptist Invitational and was seconds away from the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time of 5:00.30.

Senior Emma Ramirez finished seventh in the indoor mile with a time of 5:33.17.

Sophomore Tia Streeter, a mid-term transfer from Fullerton College (Calif.), logged the program's seventh best time at the indoor 800-meter distance finishing fourth with a time of 2:23.58.

Senior Cara Mack and junior Maira Salinas rounded out MSU performances at the Jayhawk Classic finishing ninth and 15th in the 3,000-meter run with times of 11:04.94 and 11:46.74.

Midwestern State also competes in the Central Oklahoma Indoor Invitational Saturday at OU's Mosier Indoor Facility.
