Lisa Hampton pours in 21 to lead Mustangs past Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. — Senior guard Lisa Hampton connected on five 3-pointers in the first half on her way to a career-high 21 points to lead Midwestern State to a 79-70 win over Cameron Saturday afternoon at Aggie Gymnasium.

It was the third straight win for the Mustangs, who improved to 16-3 on the season and 7-2 in Lone Star Conference play.

Hampton took just one more 3-point attempt after intermission as she matched her career-best five makes from beyond the arc for the seventh time. She is now within four 3-pointers of moving past MSU career 3-point leader Andrea Buben, who connected on 132 treys from 2006-10.

"Lisa really got us going in the first half especially her first one," MSU coach Noel Johnson said. "That finally got us off on the right foot."

Hampton answered Cameron senior guard Brandi Leal with back-to-back triples near the 13-minute mark of the opening half to turn a one-point deficit into a quick five-point lead before Andrea Carter and Taylor Dowd hit consecutive buckets to finish off a 10-0 run for a 17-8 lead with 10:13 to play.

It was also the start of a good night for Carter, who notched her eighth double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Dowd finished with a season-high 14 points.

"This is a great shooter's gym," Johnson said. "That was key for Lisa and Taylor who really saw the rim well tonight."

The Mustangs led by as many as 14 points in the first half then stretched the lead to 18 after scoring the first seven points of the second half to lead 48-30 on a Dianna Jones 3-pointer with 17:52 to play.

Cameron stretched the game out in the closing minutes but could never get closer than seven.

Jones scored in double figures for the 17th consecutive game finishing with 11 points and eight assists.

Jazzmine Robertson finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds to pace Cameron which fell to 9-8 on the season and to 6-2 LSC play.
