LAWTON, Okla. — Bretson McNeal and Derrell Gibbs put on a 3-point shooting exhibition Saturday afternoon at Aggie Gymnasium to spur Midwestern State to an 88-77 win over Cameron in Lone Star Conference play.
The duo combined for 11 triples as the Mustangs improved to 17-4 on the season while improving to 6-1 in league play.
"This was our best shooting night of the season," MSU coach Nelson Haggerty said. "Both Bretson and Derrell stepped up to give us great leadership on the floor and (senior guard) Thad Rideau gave us a big lift when we needed it in the second half."
Rideau buried two straight 3-pointers then fed Trevor Fuller for a two-handed dunk to give the Mustangs a commanding 18-point lead at 63-45 with 10:24 to play in the second half.
It wasn't enough to overshadow a career night by Gibbs, who connected on five 3-pointers on his way to 21 points to better a 16-point effort against Tarleton State back in 2013.
McNeal was no slouch either knocking down six triples on his way to 26 points which is the most he has scored in a regulation game this season and one point shy of his 27-point outburst in MSU's double overtime win over Lynn (Fla.) back in December.
Cameron whittled the lead down to eight on a few occasions, but Midwestern put the game away with a strong performance at the free throw line where the Mustangs went 18-of-24 for a season-best 79.2 percentage.
Senior forward Xavier Blackburn chipped in 12 points and pulled down six rebounds while going 8-of-9 from the charity stripe, while senior guard Kevin Wagner had six points while dishing out seven assists.
Rideau and junior forward Khapri Alston also had six points for the Mustangs.
KeDorian Sullivan had 16 points to pace the Aggies who fell to 10-9 and 2-5.
