UPDATE: Man Tased on Highway 287 Dies

Around 11:25 a.m. on February 3rd. Wichita County Sheriff's responded to a check welfare on the highway between Electra and Iowa Park, the caller stated they had run out of gas and needed assistance. As the deputies made their way to the scene, other calls were made about a disturbance.

Upon arrival, deputies and a DPS trooper encountered a 35-year-old male who became aggressive and indifferent towards the deputies who attempted to talk to him.

The subject began trying to run out into the roadway, and deputies started trying to control him at which point they tased him. After being tased and handcuffed, the subject became unresponsive and stopped breathing. The deputies began to perform CPR and the subject was rushed to Electra Memorial Hospital and then transferred to United Regional Hospital.

On February 4 at approximately 7:42 p.m., the 35-year-old male, Wilber Castillo Gongora, died at United Regional Health Care Center.  He was transported to Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.  Gongora was a resident of Hardeman County.

Sheriff David Duke contacted Wichita County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division and Texas Rangers to conduct a parallel investigation on the incident.
