Wichita Falls, TX -
Heart disease continues to be the leading cause of the death in America and one local business wants to change that by helping Texomans create healthy eating habits.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says each year about 600,000 people die of heart disease in America, that is one in every four deaths.
Andrea Grassi, a dietitian with United Market Street told Newschannel 6 while these statistics are alarming you do not have to be in that number.
"We can prevent that and one way we can prevent that is by following the American Heart Association's guidelines of eating more fruits, vegetables, choosing more whole grains and eating fish at least three to four times a week," said Grassi.
Grassi says adding the following to your grocery list will help you create a Heart Healthy cart:
1) Adding vegetables and fruits, deep colored such as: blueberries, rasberries and strawberries to your diet. These fruits have lots of antioxidants which are great in preventing stroke and heart attack.
2) Healthy fats: Olive oil, avocados, walnuts.
3) Whole grains: Oatmeal, quinoa, whole wheat, and wild rice, etc.
4) Follow Market Street NuVal nutrition scoring system. On every product in it's store there is a rating from 0 to 100. Zero meaning unhealthy and 100 being healthy.
Grassi said shopping around the perimeter of the grocery store will help you keep on track and away from items that are not beneficial to your diet.
Market Street is also providing tours with dietitians that are willing to help you create a healthy diet.
