Mustangs drop two to Texas Woman's

Midwestern State mounted two comeback efforts Saturday at Mustangs Park.

Both fell short as Texas Woman's came away with wins of 8-5 and 13-11 to earn a split of the weekend series.

The Pioneers (12-12, 4-2) used a five-hit effort by Laura Mabary in the opener to jump out to a 6-1 lead in the sixth inning.

The junior catcher from Forney delivered run-scoring singles in the first, sixth and seventh innings and added a leadoff double in the fifth frame to ace TWU's 13-hit attack.

Nicole Nordie drove in two more runs going 2-for-4 with a double while Tori Bice chipped in three more hits.

Midwestern struck for two solo homers by Baylee Voigt in the sixth and Kelley Schaefer in the seventh to go along with three more unearned runs as the Mustangs plated a run in the sixth and three in the seventh to pull within three runs.

Sophomore Erin Knox took the loss in the circle for the Mustangs allowing six earned runs on 13 hits in seven inning. She registered two strikeouts and walked three.

Midwestern State trailed by four runs in the sixth and six runs in the seventh in the nightcap as Mabary once against starred for the Pioneers.

She struck for a pair of singles and drove in four runs while Bice and Tealey Farquhar had three hits each as TWU piled up 16 safeties.

MSU junior Katelyn Vinson spurred the Mustangs' late inning comeback with a solo home run in the sixth and three-run shot in the seventh for her eighth and ninth long balls of the season.

Voigt paced the Mustangs' 13-hit parade by going 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles and an RBI.

Katlyn Holmes took the loss for the Mustangs allowing 13 runs -- all earned -- on 16 hits with five walks and a strikeout to fall to 8-5.

Midwestern fell to 15-10 and 2-6.
