Sierra Campbell hit a hole-in-one on the Par 3, 167-yard Hole No. 4 in the opening round of theMidwesternn State Invitational Monday at the par-72, 5,843-yard course at the Wichita Falls Country Club to help the Mustangs out to a six-stroke lead.

"It's always fun to see a kid make a hole-in-one," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "And we finally came through with a fourth quality score especially with the field we have here. It should be a lot of fun tomorrow."

Freshman Sarah Moore battled through a triple bogey on Hole No. 16 which threatened to spoil a solid round but recoved for a par and a birdie to close out a 74 to stand third on the individual leaderboard three strokes behind co-leaders Whitlee Woods of West Texas A&M and Hee-Leina Kim of Colorado State-Pueblo.

"The last several holes, the south wind really kicked up to make it a little tougher," Ray said. "The stumbled a little bit, but I was really proud of the way the girls mentally stayed with it. The greens dried out and it was just tougher."

Campbell wrapped up 3-over 74 to stand fourth, while senior Brenna Moore turned in a 4-over 76 to tie for fifth through one round of play.

"Brenna didn't play her best golf today, but still shot a 76," Ray said. "That's a credit to her, but she really hung in there and grinded it out to give us a good score."

Sophomore Hayley Dambold gave the Mustangs five players in the Top 10 by firing a 5-over 77 while sophomore Kellie Martin is tied for 46th with a 12-over 84.

Rogers State's Kina Boone also logged a hole-in-one on the Par-3, 147-yard Hole No. 2 as the Hillcats finished with a 29-over 317 to place sixth.

West Texas A&M (308/+20), Tarleton State (309/+21), Academy of Art (Calif.) (314/+26) and McLennan CC (Texas) (316/+28) round out the first five.

MSU junior Kynze Mann (84/46t) and sophomore Madison Smith (89/64t) competed as individual medalists.

The final round at the Wichita Falls Country Club is set for Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

Midwestern State delivered a pair of strong rounds on the opening day of the St. Mary's Rattler Invitational Monday played at the Par-71, 7,007-yard course at The Republic Golf Club.

The Mustangs head into Tuesday's final round in third with a two-round, 12-over total of 580 standing two strokes behind tournament co-leaders Incarnate Word and St. Edward's.

Sophomore Thomas Smith and Luke Thomas lead the way for the Mustangs as both players fired 2-over totals of 144 to tie for seventh on the individual leaderboard seven strokes behind Incarnate Word's Austin Jordan, who carded rounds of 72 and 65 for a 5-under 137.

Smith delivered one of three sub-par rounds for the Mustangs improving on a 74 to shoot a 1-under 70 in the second round, while Thomas fired a 71 and 73.

Senior Derek Oland opened with a 1-under 70 before struggling to a 76 for a 4-over 176 to tie for 13th, while freshman Will Mullins brushed off an opening round 78 to score a 1-under 70 in the second round to tie for 16th with a 6-over total of 148.

Junior Brandon Banks rounded out MSU scoring firing scores of 76 and 81 for a 15-over 157 to tie for 49th.

The tournament concludes with a final round on Tuesday.
