Mustangs slam #12 Angelo State in Game 1

Katy Vandewater connected for a grand slam in a six-run fifth inning to lift Midwestern State to an 8-3 win over Angelo State in Game 1 Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

The Mustangs (18-14, 5-10) can clinch a series win over the 12th-ranked Rambelles with a win in Game 2 later this afternoon.

Senior first baseman Katelyn Potts reached on a fielding error with one out in the fifth frame to ignite a four-hit inning as Katlyn Holmes, Paige Stevens and Haley Howerton followed with singles to give theMustangs a 3-2 lead before Kelley Schaefer was hit by a pitch.

Junior Katelyn Vinson lined out to deep center field with the bases loaded before Vandewater blasted her ninth homer of the season over the left-field fence push the MSU advantage to 8-2.

The Mustangs used the long ball earlier to get to Angelo State ace Brandy Marlett as Potts launched her second homer of the year to lead off the third inning and Schaefer belted her third homer over the left-field fence with one out in the fourth.

Marlett took the loss to fall to 14-3 allowing eight runs -- two earned -- on seven hits in five innings of work.

Holmes earned the win in the circle to improve to 9-6 permitting three runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts in the complete game.

Schaefer accounted for two hits to pace MSU's eight-hit attack, while Tina Cisneros and Camry Weinheimer had two hits each for the Rambelles.

Angelo State fell to 25-9-1 and 10-8-1.

Mustangs take series with 7-1 win over Angelo State in finale

Haley Howerton legged out four hits and Katelyn Vinson drilled her 12th homer of the year and drove in four runs to lift Midwestern State to a 7-1 win over 12th-ranked Angelo State in the series finale Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

MSU claimed the series win by taking three of four games over the Rambelles to improve to 19-14 on the season and 6-10 in Lone Star Conference play.

The duo combined to give the Mustangs a lift in the first as Howerton reached on an infield single before Vinson launched the first pitch she saw from Angelo State starter Brady Marlett over the left-field fence to give MSU an early 2-0 lead.

Marlett allowed the first five Mustangs to reach in the second inning with Katelyn Potts and Paige Stevens delivering consecutive run-scoring singles to push the Midwestern advantage to 4-0.

Marlett would take the loss to fall to 14-4 allowing seven runs -- six earned -- on five hits in just one inning of work.

Howerton greeted ASU reliever Kenedy Urbany with an RBI infield single and Vinson followed with a two-run single through the left side of the infield to push the Mustangs' lead to 7-0.

It would be more than enough for sophomore starter Tayler Jerrick, who flirted with her team-best fourth shutout of the season before surrendering an unearned run in the sixth inning.

Jerrick improved to 5-3 allowing an unearned run on four hits in the complete game victory. She notched five strikeouts and issued one walk.

The Anaheim, Calif. native beat the Rambelles twice over the weekend posting a 0.50 ERA allowing one earned run on nine hits in 14 innings. Jerrick notched 12 strikeouts and walked two.

Midwestern hits the road to face Oklahoma Christian Tuesday night in Oklahoma City. The twin bill is slated for 5 and 7 p.m. at Tom Heath Field at Lawson Plaza.

Angelo State dropped to 25-10-1 overall and to 10-9-1 in league play.
