Central Oklahoma sweeps past Mustangs

Central Oklahoma battered Midwestern State in a doubleheader sweep Tuesday night at Mustangs Park by scores of 18-5 and 5-1.

The Mustangs, who fell to 22-22, close the regular season with a four-game set at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday and Saturday. MSU can clinch a berth in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament at the site of the regular season champion on May 1 and 2 with a sweep of the Javelinas.

MSU senior Kelley Schaefer struck for a pair of home runs in the opener to join Kim Jerrick (56) and Katelyn Vinson (51) as the third MSU player with 40 career homers while extending her record to 192 career RBIs.

Schaefer went 2-for-3 in both games to up her team leading batting average to .355.

Sophomore pitcher Katlyn Holmes drilled her second homer of the season down the left-field line in the fifth inning of Game 1 to wrap up Mustangs' highlights.

Central Oklahoma scored four runs in the first then had a two-run blast by Ashleigh Tramel and a Brooke Zukerman grand slam to spur an eight-run third  before throwing up six more in the fifth inning to close out the rout.

The Bronchos erupted for 21 hits to match the most MSU has allowed in a regulation game in program history.

UCO jumped out to an early lead on the strength of an Ally Dziadula two-run blast in the first inning of  Game 2 before tacking on tow more on RBIs from Kaylee Brunson and Ashton Smith.

Schaefer drove in the Mustangs' lone run of the game on a bounding hopper over the UCO third baseman's head to plate Haley Howerton in the first inning, but that's the only offense MSU could muster off of Nicole Brady, who allowed one run on five hits in the complete game victory.

MSU starter Tayler Jerrick strung together four consecutive scoreless frames before allowing a final run in the seventh. She fell to 6-7 on the season permitting five runs on 13 hits with five strikeouts.
