Vivint Response

How does Vivint ensure the security of its systems?

·

Vivint follows best practices in the design of our systems, meeting and in many cases exceeding industry standards for security.

·

Vivint continuously monitors, tests and updates its systems as new cyber threats and vulnerabilities emerge in the market to ensure its customers are protected.

How does the security of a Vivint system differ from that of DIY smart home products?

·

We design our systems so they work together securely, out of the box, with no need for a customer or installer to manually configure security settings.

·

Vivint SkyControl works across a private, encrypted wireless network, separate from the homeowner's network and Internet provider.

·

Many DIY devices come with default passwords that are publicly listed and exploited by hackers.  With self-installed devices, consumers have the responsibility to remember to reset these passwords to avoid vulnerability. (As mentioned above, Vivint systems are secure right out of the box with automatically generated security settings.)

Can hackers access a customer's video camera?

·

Video footage is encrypted from the SkyControl panel all the way to the cloud and back. Vivint has no record of video camera interception to date.

·

Only the customer can decide who can access their Vivint system. No one else has access to the customer's video feeds, including Vivint's central monitoring team.

How does Vivint protect against tampering/jamming?

·

The Vivint SkyControl panel detects jamming attempts and alerts our central monitoring station, prompting the equivalent of an alarm situation.

·

A hacker would need equipment that costs hundreds to thousands of dollars, and would also need to be close to the home to cause false alarms or get information about a homeowner's activity.

·

An attacker could do the same thing by throwing a rock at a window, or watching doors and lights of a house to determine when someone is home or away.

What should consumers consider before purchasing smart home devices?
·

Security should always be top of mind when buying smart home system or products, as well as buying them from a company that will support and stand behind all aspects of the products or services.

·

Get your system professionally installed. Taking this route alleviates the burden of worrying about resetting default passwords.
