Body of Fort Sill Soldier Spotted

Fort Sill, Oklahoma - Oklahoma Highway Patrol said the body of a Fort Sill soldier was spotted floating down stream.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said Wednesday that during the continued search for Staff Sergeant David Lee Hawkins, Hawkins' body was spotted twice by soldiers as it was floating down stream in Medicine Bluff Creek.

A Black Hawk helicopter attempted to recover the body, but was unsuccessful. The body is now believed to be hung up in brush. However, troopers say because Lake Lawtonka's flood gates have been opened, water levels in the creek are too high to safely operate a water craft in order to reach the victim, resulting in the suspension of Wednesday's search.

Rough terrain and worsening weather conditions complicated search efforts for Hawkins, who went missing over the weekend. Hawkins' car was found submerged in Medicine Bluff Creek and officials believe he may have been attempting to cross a low-water crossing when he was swept away in the current.
