Altus Rape Suspect Found Dead

Altus, Oklahoma -The man suspected of sexually assaulting an elderly woman in her home near Altus has been found dead.

Police in Texas say he committed suicide after leading them on a chase. He's been identified as 39-year-old Mike Frederick. He was wanted by Texas police after a string of attempted home invasions in Collingsworth County and Hall County, which are just across the Oklahoma border in the Texas Panhandle.

Jackson County Sheriff Roger LeVick called it one of the worst cases he has worked on in his career, but now he is confident that justice has finally been served.

Sheriff LeVick had a lengthy list of suspects who came in contact with the victim; Mike Frederick was not one of them.

"Our suspect had no criminal history, comes from a great family. He just has mental illness. It's something we may never know what, but something snapped," said LeVick.

After Frederick led police on a chase in Texas, ending in his eventual suicide, questions began to be answered. A note found in Frederick's car listed the victim's name and had what LeVick calls other large amounts of circumstantial evidence with it.

LeVick sent DNA composites and fingerprints to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. He says he is confident it will come back conclusive, but will not close the case just yet.

"I won't officially close it until we get the positive via DNA evidence or fingerprint evidence back from OSBI," explained LeVick.

Residents in Altus, like Hope Barker, say they will still keep an eye out for their surroundings, but this helps ease the worry.

"Not too long ago they had problems with home invasions, like people breaking in and stealing stuff. We got a security system because it freaked me out. But I feel better knowing that he is not here anymore," said Barker.

Those DNA tests may not be available for several weeks. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office is also awaiting toxicology results from the Texas Medical Examiner to see if Frederick had any type of drugs in his system.
