Former Rider Raider star J.T. Barrett will start for the #1-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes this Saturday when they visit Rutgers, OSU Head Coach Urban Meyer announced Tuesday.

He replaces Cardale Jones, who narrowly edged him out for the starting job in August. Jones had thrown just seven touchdown passes this season, with five interceptions. Barrett had accounted for seven touchdowns in just the past two weeks, playing as the team's "red-zone" quarterback.

"It was a difficult decision, but the red zone production and third down production were the two areas that made the difference," Meyer said Tuesday in the Big Ten's weekly teleconference. "He earned that with the way he played Saturday."

Barrett started the first 12 games for the Buckeyes last season, going 11-1 and setting more than 50 school and conference records, before being hurt against Michigan. Jones replaced him and won the team's final three games, and the inaugural College Football Playoff Championship.
