Late runs by Lubbock Christian helped the Lady Chaps claim a 3-0 victory (25-21, 25-19, 26-24) over the Midwestern State volleyball team Tuesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
In the opening set, Midwestern State (6-24) chalked up three early aces from freshman setter Hayden Blair and sophomore defensive specialist Leah Lychock to jump out to a 6-1 advantage.
Lubbock Christian (18-9) slowly crept back into the game, coming within two points at 10-8 following an MSU attack error. Facing a 16-12 deficit, the Lady Chaps reeled off a 7-0 run capped off by a kill from freshman outside hitter Emily Hanaway to put LCU up three late in the frame. The Lady Chaps held off a Mustangs rally that pulled MSU within one to come away with a 25-21 victory.
Midwestern State shook off an early 6-2 hole with freshman middle blocker Kiley Beaver sparking a 4-0 spurt for the Maroon and Gold to even the set at 8-8. Kills from junior right side hitter Christiana Tavo and senior outside hitter Kacey Deterding helped the Lady Chaps open up a 16-12 lead before an MSU run brought the Mustangs back within a point at 17-16. A 4-0 run late in the set helped LCU carry momentum to a 25-19 win to take a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
LCU went up 4-0 to begin the third set before the Mustangs rallied to tie the frame at eight apiece following a kill from senior outside hitter Hunter Porter. The Lady Chaps looked as if they would cruise late in the third set with an 18-13 advantage, but the Mustangs still had some fight left as a block by Beaver and Blair pulled MSU within one at 21-20.
After an LCU timeout, back-to-back kills from sophomore middle blocker Addison Semer gave the Mustangs set point at 24-23. However, Hanaway and Deterding posted kills before teaming together for a block to pull out a 26-24 victory to earn the sweep.
Freshman middle blocker Olivia Schiffner led Midwestern with nine kills on a .444 hitting percentage while sophomore outside hitter Meghan Bettis added seven kills and a team-best 16 digs.
Deterding tallied 15 kills on a .371 clip while Hanaway recorded 11 kills with just one error for a .556 percentage to lead the Lady Chaps.
