McNeal, Mustangs shoot down Stars, 103-51

Senior guard Bretson McNeal was simply perfect on his way to a game-high 22 points leading 22nd-ranked Midwestern State to a 103-51 win over Oklahoma City in its home opener Sunday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Lone Star Conference Preseason Player of the Year knocked all six of his shots -- and all from beyond the arc -- while going 4-for-4 from the line as the Mustangs with 14 triples as a team in the rout.
It was the fifth straight season opening win for the Mustangs, who hit the road to play Colorado State-Pueblo on Thursday and Adams State (Colo.) on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. (Central Time).
Senior Jordan Stevens buried three triples of his own on the way to a stellar all-around line of 21 points, seven assists and five rebound while fellow starting backcourt mate Hershell Grant connected on two 3s while shooting 5-of-7 from the field for a total of 14 points to go along with five rebounds.
Junior guard Sheldon Hagigal pitched in 16 points while going 8-of-8 from the charity stripe with a pair of 3-pointers to add to the onslaught.
Midwestern jumped out to a 14-2 lead from the jump and didn't allow field goal until Oklahoma City's Andrew Akaji hit a layup at the 9:52 mark of the first half. By then, Midwestern controlled a 22-8 edge.
The Mustangs continued to pull away taking a 56-22 lead at the half and the advantage would grow to 60 when DeVaughn Jones swished a free throw with 2:21 to play to put MSU up 103-43.
MSU dominated in every phase of the game doubling up the Stars 44-22 on the boards while turning 20 OKC turnovers into 33 points.
Jordan Mason paced Oklahoma City with 10 points off of the bench in a game that counted as an exhibition for the Stars.
