BBB Warns About Holiday Scams

It's no secret that donors are more likely to give during the holiday season. In fact, American charities receive almost one-third of their annual donations during this time.

On Giving Tuesday, December 1st, and throughout the holiday season, BBB Wise Giving Alliance (BBB WGA) is urging donors to explore where their money is going before making a donation.

BBB WGA has five important steps donors should take to ensure an organization is trustworthy.

1. Look up the exact name of a charity. Charities that support the same cause often have similar names.

2. Avoid on-spot donations - don't be pressured to make an immediate decision.

3. Third, be cautious of emotional pleas which may exploit the holiday season.

4. Avoid charities who don't disclose information to BBB WGA as this is a critical red flag for donors.

5.  Lastly, visit Give.org to research whether or not a charity has met the in-depth evaluations of the 20 BBB Standards for Charity Accountability.
