Tips For The Best Black Friday Shopping

Nearly 140 million Americans will hit the stores for major sales this Thanksgiving weekend, according to the National Retail Federation. If you plan on taking advantage of some of the deals there are a number of things you can do to get the biggest bang for your buck.

“The first thing I would say is create a budget,” said Michelle Kuehner, an Investment Advisor Representative at Personal Money Planning. “Before you go out and spend any money you need to know how much you have to spend.”

After creating a budget, you have to do your research. You can do that by browsing ads online. You can find an assortment of ads by heading to

“The next thing is to create a list,” said Kuehner. “Figure out who you're buying for and what your plan on buying. It’s much easier to have a plan of action.”

Once you create your action plan, make sure you stick to your budget. You can do that by buying gift cards to the stores you plan to shop in come Black Friday. That way it limits your spending and you’re less likely to overspend.

While many people will brave the conditions for the sales, the stores aren't the only places you can find hot deals.

“I like to do it online as much as I can,” said Wichita Falls resident Susan Robertson. “You still get the same savings but you don’t have to deal with the crowds and it comes straight to your door.”

In the past, consumers have had to wait for Cyber Monday for savings. However, many stores are running its same Black Friday deals online.

“A lot of things are offering Black Friday specials if you go online now,” said Robertson. “That’s how we prefer to do it.”

If you’re like Robertson, and prefer to shop online just pay close attention to the details.

“Another good thing to look for is the shipping,” said Kuehner. “Make sure you're calculating the shipping cost, the time that it takes and the return policies.”

Many stores will also price match. So if you find a better Black Friday steal at a different location make sure you show that price because they could give you that cheaper deal.

Black Friday sales start at Best Buy Thursday at 5 p.m.  At Kohl's, Target, and Walmart the savings start Thursday at 6 p.m.
