MSU Men Reach #1 in D2 Media Poll

MSU Sports MSU Sports

Midwestern State took over the No. 1 spot in the latest D2 Media Poll released Tuesday afternoon by the D2 Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America.

It's the first time as a member of NCAA Division II that the Mustangs earned a No. 1 ranking after reaching as high as No. 3 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches' final regular season rankings in 2009-10.

MSU, which improved to 9-1 with a 75-73 win over Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) on Saturday, stood second in the poll in each of the last two weeks.

The Mustangs overtook West Liberty (W. Va.) with just two first-place votes despite the unbeaten Hilltoppers securing nine of the 12 top votes cast with four national votes left uncast.

Midwestern is off to its best start since winning the first 13 games of the 2011-12 season.

The Mustangs are one of seven teams from the South Central Region to receive mention in the poll joining No. 3 Angelo State, No. 16 Tarleton State and No. 17 Rogers State (Okla.) while St. Edward's, Fort Lewis (Colo.) and Texas A&M-Commerce are receiving votes.

Minnesota State-Moorhead, Western Oregon and Augustana (S.D.) round out the top five.

MSU returns to action on New Year's Eve against Science & Arts of Oklahoma. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
