MSU Coach, Pair Earn Weekly Honors

McNeal, Fuller Earn LSC Weekly Awards

WICHITA FALLS, TX - Midwestern State's Bretson McNeal and Trevor Fuller gained Lone Star Conference Player of the Week honors Monday as released by league officials.

The No. 4-ranked Mustangs extended their winning streak to 12 games with victories over No. 6 Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Commerce to improve to 15-1 on the season, claiming sole possession of the LSC lead.

The hot-shooting McNeal garnered top offensive honors for the second time this season after connecting on seven of his 10 3-pointers while shooting 55 percent from the field.

The Minneapolis native canned three triples to help MSU erase a 10-point second-half deficit to beat rival Tarleton State 66-63 Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

McNeal hit four 3s on his way to an 18-point, 4-rebound performance to help the Mustangs snap Texas A&M-Commerce's 11-game home court winning streak  -- dating back to last season -- 84-69 Saturday at The Fieldhouse.

Fuller earned top defensive honors for the second time this season swatting 10 shots and redirecting countless others as the Mustangs strung together stops to hold Tarleton State without field goal for an almost 9-minute stretch on Wednesday before holding A&M-Commerce without a field goal for the first 6 1/2 minutes of the second half on Saturday.

Fuller blocked a career-high seven shots while finishing with seven points and three rebounds against Tarleton State.

The Dallas native was credited with three blocked shots while pulling down eight rebounds and recording two steals Saturday at Texas A&M-Commerce.

Midwestern State plays host to Texas A&M-Kingsville Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Haggerty Named National Coach of the Week

Midwestern State's Nelson Haggerty was named the NCAA Division II HoopDirt.com Coach of the Week after guiding the Mustangs to wins over No. 6 Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Commerce last week.

MSU extended its winning streak to 12 games while improving to 15-1 on the season. The Mustangs stand alone atop the Lone Star Conference with a perfect 4-0 mark.

Midwestern has strung together win streaks of at least 11 games in four of Haggerty's five seasons at the helm.

The win over Tarleton State was the Mustangs' second victory over a Top 10 opponent this season, as MSU claimed a 77-71 result over No. 3 Bellarmine (Ky.) in November.

Haggerty ran his overall record to 112-31 (.783) in four-plus season at Midwestern State.

Other coaches honored by HoopDirt.com for Week 8 included Clemson's Brad Brownell who guided the Tigers to wins over No. 6 Duke and No. 8 Miami and former Villanova coach Rollie Massimino who has Keiser (Fla.) ranked 10th in the NAIA with a 19-1 mark.

Haggerty becomes the fourth LSC coach to earn the honor this season, joining Texas A&M-Kingsville's Johnny Estelle, Angelo State's Cinco Boone and Tarleton State's Lonn Reisman.
